Pressure Triggers Magnetism

Cu2+ in combination with F, H2O and pyrazine gives rise to a zoo of coordination polymers, easily interconverted using temperature, pressure or irradiation. In particular, orbital re-ordering is triggered by pressure, thus producing different kinds of magnetic networks.

The high pressure structural investigation was carried out by Ms. Arianna Lanza and Dr. Martin Fisch within the group of PD Dr. Piero Macchi. The work is in collaboration with Dr. Christoph Fiolka (in Dr. Karl Krämer's group) and the Paul Scherrer Institute.
